Hi! My name is Pierce Blakeney, and I am a Health Sciences major at the University of Central Florida with goals to pursue a future in medicine. I am currently exploring different areas of the healthcare field and developing a strong foundation in science and research. My goal is to learn how I can utilize my strengths in order to help as many people as I can. Writing is possibly the most important tool that we can take advantage of in the modern world as it is timeless and is effective in getting information and messages across to different types of audiences. Enjoy exploring my work on the learning outcomes of writing as well as the research I have gathered regarding discourse communities and the roles of a resident assistant.
The Learning Outcomes
Course Outcome 1: Generating Inquiry: Having the ability to ask valuable questions about writing and generate ideas through research I utilized this outcome while developing my research questions and when exploring how discourse and communication shape communities. One example of how I generated inquiry was through Major assignment 3 "How effective are different types of discourse for spreading information." I want to ask a lot more questions about topics surrounding my career choice in the future and learning how to generate inquiry has given me more confidence and a better foundation for where I should be looking for questions and what is worth asking about.
Course Outcome 2: Multiple Ways of Writing: Being able to adapt your writing for the audience to best understand. When conducting research I took data from different types of discourse such as written, digital and verbal communication for Major assignment 3 I performed in person interviews and monitored the group chat communication. Learning about how the different ways of writing have a different effect depending on the audience has been very interesting and opened my eyes to how people work differently and retain information in different ways. I plan to pay attention to my future audiences and adapt to their learning need to have the most effective form of communication.
Course Outcome 3: Information Literacy: Determining whether a source is credible and hold value in a conversation. While creating my annotated bibliography, I was forced to find evidence from different sources where I was required to determine whether or not it comes from a trusted source
such as Swales, John. The Concept of Discourse Community, 2011, www.mjreiff.com/uploads/3/4/2/1/34215272/swales.pdf Links to an external site.Links to an external site. from the reading worksheet #3. Becoming proficient in identifying information literacy has allowed me to create a research paper with credible information that hold value in a conversation when contributing the knowledge I have found to my fellow peers.
Course Outcome 4: Research Genre Production: Being able to perform academic research and having a clear structure of the piece of literature. While writing my pieces of work I made sure to include structures such as a CARS model. MA#3 has a introduction writing in a CARS model format to keep a interesting yet descriptive structure. I plan to utilize the structure types I have learned throughout this course to make sure my future pieces of literature are easy to understand and can reach the target audience without leaving too many questions.
Course Outcome 5: Contributing Knowledge: Being able to talk about and break down a source to contribute value to the conversation. This class and semester has helped me gain a new view on how writing connects to my everyday life and how I can identify/implement it more into my own literature. Major assignment 3 discussing how the RAs use discourse to spread information. I plan to contribute my knowledge to different topics in the future, such as medical research, in hope that I can add valuable information to a conversation among professionals in the field looking for a new point of view.
Course Outcome 6: Revision: Going over work that has already been completed to make improvement changes. In my portfolio I have a revision/explanation as to why I included a piece of work to support one of the learning outcomes. WHY? Sections of my portfolio have been the most influential way for me to improve my revisions and reflect back on the work I have completed this semester.
